So living most of my life with a corpus collosum and pons that are wired backwards, I guess you could say I'm the equivalent of a Siamese human, with the minor exception that I do not necessarily run into walls every day. Ok maybe every other day, but still.
Originally dyslexics are seen as "Different" or even "Slow", the truth of the matter is that like any other "Special needs" child I didn't really care why i needed to be put in a class with my buddy David that had downs syndrome.
He was awesome, I remember I loved to play with him, his toys were cool but his overprotective parents thought I was making fun of him, he had this horribly short attention span but he was always so happy.
It's funny how soicioty at large fails either side of the intellectual spectrum miserably.
In university they refer to it as the "Bell Curve", ie: you've paid a lot of money to attend school, yet your professor sucks at his job so you and your entire class fail the final exam, with the exception of mabye two people, and it's a requisite for your next years course to the administration will modify the grade point avradge to suit the masses, ie: those that failed around the middle will be "Bell Curved" to the new center mark. If you are one of the lucky few that were in the top 1% and passed with a good mark (98 - 99%) your marks suddenly become like 110% to 120% depending on bell curve motion.
So is it fair? To treat the extremes and cater to them? I mean think about it this way, realistically intelligence has a part in deciding what you do with your life but no where close to "motivation" and "attitude" in terms of "The means to success" within your life and profession.
Enter the public schooling system, so every developed country has two tiers of education. Public and Private, story goes private schools have money, because they cost a lot to go to and as such hire much better teachers and in turn offer your children a better education. Where as the public schooling system has teachers that meet "Minimum" requirments in regards to credentials and thus get paid less.
Affirmative action is bacially stateing that your child due to their background may not be achieving their full potential based upon their upbringing and your income. IE: you only make 50K / year, there's pretty much no chance your child will go to private school if your household income is below a certain point.
I think that affirmative action is a load of bullshit, and I'll tell you why. China, India, and Russia, three of the most populated countries on the planet. And per capita three of the poorest; turn out geniuses by the thousands. How do they do this? what's their secret?
Well communism and socialism although notable ideals, and I say ideal because as political practices they are inherently flawed (they do not account for greed), hell even Karl Marx wrote to his student Bertrand Russell that "Communism would only work for agrarian based economies", id like to note that both china and Russia killed anyone in mass murders, in Russia under Stalin they killed all the officers and intelligencia, and in china under Mao they took a "Great Step Backwards"
Ok, so we take a look at the common issues between the G8 and their counterparts, the focus wihtin those three countries is education, since economics can't buy you potential, you have to work with what you've got. So in each of those countries you are pushed into whatever you show a talent for at a young age, and it's driven into your skull until you graduate university. Then bieng all that you know it's what you do.
Good examples of the fallout of this educational meat grinder are the "Suicides" that occur in china when students are not accepted into their university, or they do not have the financial means to attend.
One of the base tenants of the eastern states used to be that school should be free, thus placing the burden of school on the tax payer. In the case of Russia, taxes were optional due to severe corruption, however the schools were respected culturally. The police would not give speeding tickets to university professors, as a personal example. Same holds true for both China and India, professors are treated with respect as the heads of society.
And that's the only real difference between the western and eastern philosophies. School shouldn't be fun, children shouldn't be "Coddled" into learning. The systems in the U.S. and Canada are fundamentally broken and being replaced by private institutions due to decades of mis management.
So then there's the real issue, one of the transfer of knowledge. Ultimately school teaches you how to interact within the society of your upbringing, this is seen as "More Important" than your actual education, this is simple, if you don't get along with your peers, you won't follow them like a lemming when you graduate.
And that's what the political bodies of all countries enjoy, lemmings! people that follow their majority, people that cannot think for them selfs as a whole only as individuals. Thus we in the west allow elections to be stolen and our own governments to betray our beliefs right before our eyes.
Ultimately, schooling and education is more to do with "Control" than with "learning", Mark Twain (good ol smuel) stated that "I never let my schooling interfere with my education!"
My father once told me, "You didn't fail the system, the system failed you!", perhaps that was just positive reinforcement of my negative behavior. The road went two ways, I didn't have the "Stable Home" but I also didn't have "Affirmative Action" and as such I really didn't have any interest in "Becoming a lemming", and now I'm at that point again.
I need the papers to prove to the rest of the lemmings that I am a worthy candidate for leadership, that I am capable of all those things they look for in good leaders, however since I've never conformed the perspective management schools have of a person like me is "Well he's never been good with school?" the beauty lies in the fact that as a complete outsider to the system, I have learned how to teach myself what I need to survive.
And that's the simple fact, being labeled different from a young age I placed myself outside of the system always looking in and not caring about the outcomes of my education. However, I have never let that fear with my real education about people and about life.
Perhaps it's just age discrimination all over again; or maybe it's just that I am different and I scare people.
I guess it's the burden we all bear being parts of minorities, I'm a single white male working in his 20 somethings in a job that is normally reserved for a married man with children. I'm expected to exude the same propaganda that the masses dictate as "Good Business Acumen", Perhaps I'm more of a "House" then a "Patch Adams" because I see meetings as a huge waste of time, and I feel that "Team Building exercises" are for morons and a waste of time. The truth is simple, I've been in this field for over a decade now and I want out. I want to do something that will make me rich instead of some share holder or some owner, because when it all comes down to it the top 5% run the world and the rest of us are along for the ride.
Now remember, when everyone else is convinced to jump off a cliff by the tail of the dog. You have the opportunity to point and laugh or follow, and that is the primary difference between perspectives of those that lead and those they lead. I'm tired of seeing bad leaders laugh.
